Cybernetica becomes industrial partner for Patria to develop future armoured vehicle platforms

A defence industry consortium including Cybernetica will receive funding from the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) to develop future armoured vehicle platforms and modernise current ones in use.

The Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured System or FAMOUS is a Finnish-initiated and led project to conduct a feasibility study for the development of a new generation of armoured land vehicles suitable for use in extreme climatic and off-road conditions. The project consortium is led by Patria and includes 19 European leading defence companies from various countries. Cybernetica is the only Estonian company, acting as an industrial partner.

According to Dan Bogdanov, Director of the Information Security Research Institute, Cybernetica’s role in the project is to provide secure software development and research into cybersecurity. “The technologies in question are obviously mission-critical with no room for error or weakness in the system. At Cybernetica we can draw from our vast experience of developing cyber-physical systems with the highest security standards,” said Bogdanov.

The FAMOUS project will develop future technologies and performances that enhance ground combat capabilities in the areas of mobility, hybrid operation, power generation and energy storage, as well as security systems, situational awareness, robotics, C4I solutions, weapons systems and modern lifecycle support solutions. A comprehensive combination of land system capabilities will increase mobility on land in a common operating environment.

The program is focused on more than just platform development. It is a unique and innovative approach to developing areas of next generation technology that can be utilised in a variety of armoured vehicles and systems of these vehicles. These concepts can be implemented in future system architectures and utilised in future European armoured vehicle systems. This approach will lead to unity and thus increase coherence, standardisation and compatibility between different platforms in the EU.
