September 2014 brought another significant milestone event to the marine aid to navigation (AtoN) systems team of Cybernetica: a TelFiCon™ AtoN telematics module was deployed in the High Arctic, on the Svalbard island near the world's northernmost town - Longyearbyen. Following the ongoing trials of vibration profiling on other AtoN structures at the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket), this deployment has a remarkable host: a revolutionary compact composite lighthouse Litus Lux with integrated solar power system designed at Kystverket.
The TelFiCon™ units provided by Cybernetica are engineered to perform triaxial acceleration measurement with collision detection and inclination angle calculation functionality in addition to regular AtoN remote control and monitoring tasks. In this mission a TelFiCon™ is primarily tasked with monitoring of vibrations present in the host structure. Server side spectral analysis of uploaded acceleration data allows to monitor structural health of the host as well as to assess the incident wind speeds. Features for online re-configuration and visualization of the calculated parameters available on any platform using standard web browsers, including the power system voltage graphs, have been found particularly handy by smart phone users.
Application of AtoN telematics equipment for structural health monitoring as an added value for structural failure prevention and navigational signalling quality verification is hopefully attracting interest within the worldwide community involved with operation of the marine navigation safety infrastructure.
