Oliver Väärtnõu at Paris Cyber Summit: “Governments need to be able to move quickly and flexibly.”

Our CEO Oliver Väärtnõu attended Paris Cyber Summit last week that focused on bringing together European leaders for digital transformation. He spoke in the panel on the topic of Cyber Defence and Innovation. The panel also featured speakers from the European Defence Agency, TEHTRIS, Defense Angels, and the Ministry of Defence Italy.

Resilience is the name of the game

In this day and age where new threats keep emerging fast, whether in cyber, space or hybrid formats, resilience is the absolute key. We must think about what kind of resilient infrastructure we want to build.

“We need to rethink how we build modular resilient government infrastructure. Adaptability of the government is highly important, to be able to move quickly and flexibly,” said Väärtnõu at the event.

The world has been forced to take a big leap forward when it comes to cybersecurity, however, we need to avoid getting caught in buzzwords. It is important we understand where the tech world is moving and must keep up.

Where are the bottlenecks

EU countries are quite different when it comes to levels of understanding and levels of actual digitalisation. “Looking at Europe and at, for example, what is happening in the cloud domain, I am worried that Europe is too far behind. We should also look at what countries are doing outside of the EU, for example, at Israel,” remarked Väärtnõu.

We must, however, limit dependency on foreign technologies and keep the know-how inside our countries to be ready to quickly address any potential issues. “Countries are buying turnkey solutions without knowledge to fix things if something goes bad,” Väärtnõu illustrated the common bottleneck on a country’s digitalisation journey.

Other Estonians at speaking at the event included Kalle Laanet, the Minister of Defence of Estonia, Adres Sutt, the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Information Technology, and Merle Maigre of e-Governance Academy.
