Cybernetica’s long-standing e-governance experience has its roots deep in Estonia, and we are keen on bringing our know-how to global markets. Recently, Baldur Kubo, Project Manager at Cybernetica, joined a discussion on "Äripäeva raadio" alongside Laur Mägi from Helmes and host Indrek Kald, exploring how Estonian IT companies succeed internationally. Here are some key takeaways from Cybernetica’s experience in global expansion.
For Cybernetica, exporting is not just an expansion strategy – it’s in our DNA. With export revenue goals surpassing domestic goals for the first time in 2023, our sight is firmly set on international projects. Our in-house scientific research is something that sets us apart on global markets and tenders. Ultimately, this unique edge allows us to expand our decades-long experience to any legal and technical context, on all continents of the world.
Cybernetica’s impact spans across critical sectors worldwide:
- Maritime traffic management – Cybernetica’s systems are used to control ship traffic in some of the world’s busiest waterways, including the Malacca and Gibraltar Straits.
- Border security – Surveillance equipment on Estonia’s eastern border, which is also the external border of the EU, is developed and implemented by Cybernetica.
- Secure computing – Cybernetica won a tender to develop a secure computing platform for EUROSTAT, while competing with top secure computing providers around the world.
- Space security – A longstanding partnership with the European Space Agency has led to the development of machine learning-based cybersecurity software.
- Satellite collision prevention – Emerging from a DARPA research project, Cybernetica is working on ShareSat, a secure computing technology to prevent satellite collisions without disclosing their locations.
- X-Road expansion – Cybernetica’s UXP (Unified eXchange Platform), based on Estonia’s X-Road technology, has its largest commercial deployment in Ukraine and is now being implemented in Brazil, South America’s fastest-growing IT market. UXP is also deployed on almost every continent of the world.
Cybernetica serves 35+ markets with different products and services. Here are some of our key takeaways when entering new markets:
- Understanding local culture and finding the right partner – A strong local partnership acts as a bridge to new markets.
- Building an international team – Having a diverse workforce enhances global market understanding and client relationships.
- Simplifying solutions – Making products more accessible and services more universal to meet market needs.
- Starting small – Proof-of-concept projects help establish credibility and mitigate risks before scaling up.
Cybernetica’s journey highlights that digital export success is about more than just technology – it’s about strategic partnerships, cultural understanding, and long-term vision. As Estonia continues to lead the way in digital innovation, the world is increasingly looking to its expertise and solutions.
