This project studies the effects emerging technologies have on voting, together with prospective problem mitigation strategies. The problem setting is very much motivated by the need to enhance the Estonian Internet voting system in accordance to the ever-changing threat and opportunity landscape.
As computing environments are becoming more and more personalised, we will first be looking at secure personal voting clients based on both general-purpose mobile devices and dedicated hardware. Second, we will be studying privacy implications of recently discovered side channel attacks against paper voting. Third, we will study the options of deploying post-quantum cryptographic algorithms in voting protocols. And last-but-not-least, we will study the options of making server-side auditability more transparent and accessible for a wider set of auditors.
This project is supported by the Estonian Research Council.
